Austria defeated Jordan 3–1 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in their first World Cup match since 1998. Romano Schmid whipped in a 20th-minute opener from the edge of the box before Ali Iyad Olwan became Jordan's first World Cup goalscorer with a superb solo effort five minutes into the second half.

Yazan Abu Al-Arab's own goal restored Austria's lead in the 76th minute after a VAR review had ruled out an Arnautović effort for handball, and the veteran striker sealed the points from the penalty spot in the 12th minute of stoppage time. Ali Olwan was named Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match despite the defeat as Austria finished with 63% possession in front of 68,527 fans.

Austria join Argentina on three points at the top of Group J. Ralf Rangnick's side face the defending champions in Dallas on 22 June, while Jordan meet Algeria in Santa Clara on the same day.
