Belgium beat co-hosts the United States 4–1 at Seattle Stadium to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the fourth time. Charles De Ketelaere tapped in from Nicolas Raskin's cross on nine minutes and headed Leandro Trossard's delivery on 33 minutes, either side of Malik Tillman's deflected free-kick equaliser, as Rudi Garcia's side took control in front of 66,925 fans.

Hans Vanaken punished a Matt Freese error outside the box on 57 minutes after De Ketelaere dispossessed the goalkeeper, and substitute Romelu Lukaku rolled in from Hans Vanaken's lay-off in the third minute of stoppage time. Belgium finished with 15 shots and seven on target to the USA's seven and two, while Tillman and Weston McKennie were booked as Mauricio Pochettino's co-hosts bowed out despite scoring in a seventh straight World Cup game.

Belgium advance to face Spain in Los Angeles on Friday — a rematch of the 2014 round of 16 that the Red Devils won 2–1 after extra time. The United States exit having made program history with three group-stage wins and a first knockout victory since 2002, but Belgium's clinical finishing proved too much on the Fourth of July in Seattle.
