Canada defeated Qatar 6–0 at BC Place Vancouver for their first FIFA World Cup victory. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute, Jonathan David added a stunning volley and stabbed home before half-time after Homam Elamin was sent off, and the striker completed his hat-trick in stoppage time after Nathan Saliba's free-kick and a Mohamed Al Mannai own goal had made it 5–0.

Qatar finished with nine men when Assim Madibo was shown a straight red for a challenge that left Ismaël Koné with a serious leg injury. David was named Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match as Canada finished with 79% possession, 32 shots and ten on target in front of a sell-out crowd of 52,497.

Canada move level with Switzerland on four points at the top of Group B, ahead on goal difference. Jesse Marsch's co-hosts face the Swiss in Vancouver on 24 June, while Qatar meet Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle on the same day.
