DR Congo beat Uzbekistan 3–1 at Atlanta Stadium to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time. Eldor Shomurodov chipped Abduvohid Nematov after a defensive mix-up to give Uzbekistan a 10th-minute lead, but Yoane Wissa equalised from the penalty spot after Abdukodir Khusanov fouled him, Fiston Mayele flicked in from a deflected Meschack Elia effort, and Wissa sealed the win with a curling strike in stoppage time.
Sébastien Desabre's side dominated after the break with 58% possession, 19 shots and four on target to Uzbekistan's three and one in front of 68,239 fans. Wissa was named Superior Player of the Match, while Noah Sadiki, Nathanaël Mbuku, Khusanov, Sherzod Nasrulloev and Samuel Moutoussamy were booked. DR Congo became only the second African nation at this tournament to reach the last 32 after Cape Verde.
DR Congo finish third in Group K on four points and will face England in the round of 32 in Atlanta. Colombia top the group after drawing with Portugal in Miami, while Portugal finish second. Uzbekistan end their maiden World Cup with three defeats and 11 goals conceded.
