England beat DR Congo 2–1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta after Harry Kane scored twice in the closing quarter-hour. Brian Cipenga punished a defensive mix-up to put the Leopards ahead on seven minutes, but Kane headed Anthony Gordon's cross on 75 minutes and rifled a winner from Gordon's lay-off on 86 minutes to spare Thomas Tuchel's side a humiliating exit.

England trailed 0–1 at half-time despite dominating the ball with 60% possession, 16 shots and seven on target to DR Congo's seven and two in front of 68,239 fans. Jude Bellingham and Noah Sadiki were booked in the first half as Lionel Mpasi repeatedly denied the Three Lions before Kane's brace. Kane was named Superior Player of the Match and moved level with Just Fontaine on 13 World Cup goals.

England advance to the round of 16 and will face co-hosts Mexico at Estadio Azteca on Sunday — the same venue where El Tri beat Ecuador 2–0 a day earlier. DR Congo bow out despite taking the lead in their first World Cup knockout match, ending a run that had captivated African football.
