Germany came from behind to beat Côte d'Ivoire 2–1 at Toronto Stadium and reach the World Cup knockout stages with a game to spare. Franck Kessié fired Les Éléphants ahead in the 30th minute after Yan Diomande's low cross, but substitute Deniz Undav volleyed in Nadiem Amiri's centre on 68 minutes and turned to drill home Felix Nmecha's pass in the 94th minute to snatch all three points.
Julian Nagelsmann's side had two first-half goals ruled out for fouls on goalkeeper Yahia Fofana before Undav's introduction as part of a 60th-minute triple change transformed the game. Germany finished with around 60% possession, 16 shots and seven on target to Côte d'Ivoire's nine and two, with Undav now on five goal contributions in just 56 minutes of World Cup football.
Germany top Group E on six points and are through to the last 32 for the first time since their 2014 title. Côte d'Ivoire stay on three points and may need a result against Curaçao in Philadelphia on 25 June to advance, while Germany close the group against Ecuador in New York on the same evening.
