The Netherlands defeated Japan 2–1 at Dallas Stadium in their Group F opener. After a goalless first half, Virgil van Dijk headed in from Ryan Gravenberch's delivery in the 51st minute, Keito Nakamura levelled seven minutes later with an assist from Takefusa Kubo, and Crysencio Summerville restored the Dutch lead with a left-footed finish from Gravenberch's pass in the 64th minute.

Ronald Koeman's side controlled 70% possession and finished with six shots and four on target to Japan's four and one. Summerville was booked in the 61st minute as the Oranje held on to extend their unbeaten World Cup record against the Samurai Blue.

The result puts the Netherlands top of Group F on three points. Japan sit bottom after matchday one and face Tunisia in Monterrey on 20 June, while the Dutch meet Sweden in Houston on the same day.
