Portugal drew 1–1 with DR Congo at Houston Stadium in their Group K opener. João Neves headed in Pedro Neto's cross in the sixth minute, but Yoane Wissa powered Arthur Masuaku's set-piece delivery home in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time to record DR Congo's first World Cup goal and point since 1974.

João Cancelo had a second-half overhead kick ruled out for offside and Cristiano Ronaldo missed two clear chances as Roberto Martínez's side failed to convert 75% possession into a winner. João Neves was named Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match in front of 68,777 fans as DR Congo finished with eight shots and two on target.

Portugal and DR Congo sit level on one point in Group K. Portugal face Uzbekistan in Houston on 23 June, while DR Congo meet Colombia in Guadalajara on the same day.
