Qatar and Switzerland drew 1–1 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara. Breel Embolo converted a 17th-minute penalty after Mahmud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler, but Switzerland could not add to their lead despite dominating possession and chances. Captain Boualem Khoukhi equalised in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time, climbing highest to head in Homam Ahmed's cross and secure Qatar's first point at a World Cup finals.

Switzerland finished with 68% possession, 26 shots and seven on target to Qatar's seven and four, accumulating 3.24 expected goals to the hosts' 0.76. Mahmud Abunada, Jassem Gaber and Denis Zakaria were booked in a match watched by 67,966 fans.

The draw leaves all four Group B teams level on one point after matchday one. Switzerland face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Los Angeles on 18 June, while Qatar travel to Vancouver to meet co-hosts Canada on the same day.
