South Africa beat Korea Republic 1–0 at Monterrey Stadium to secure a historic first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage. Hugo Broos's side were without suspended midfielders Teboho Mokoena and Themba Zwane but found the breakthrough on 63 minutes when Tshepang Moremi slipped a pass through to Thapelo Maseko, who fired into the right corner past Kim Seung-gyu.
Korea Republic dominated possession at 68% and finished with eight shots and three on target to South Africa's 13 and four in front of 51,243 fans, but Son Heung-min's introduction at half-time could not unlock a resolute Bafana Bafana defence. Aubrey Modiba and Cho Gue-sung were booked on 73 and 79 minutes as Broos's side held on through six minutes of stoppage time despite Korea's late pressure.
South Africa finish second in Group A on four points and will face Canada at SoFi Stadium in the round of 32. Korea Republic end third on three points and must wait to learn whether their tally is enough to advance as one of the best third-placed teams, while Mexico's victory over Czechia confirmed the co-hosts as group winners.
