Switzerland beat Algeria 2–0 at BC Place Vancouver to reach the World Cup round of 16. Johan Manzambi's breakaway set up Breel Embolo for a tap-in on 10 minutes, and Dan Ndoye struck a low drive from the edge of the box one minute into the second half as Murat Yakin's side ended an 88-year wait for a knockout victory at the tournament.

Algeria held 55% possession but managed only two shots on target as Gregor Kobel made two saves in front of 52,497 fans. Switzerland finished with 11 shots and five on target to Algeria's eight and two. Farès Chaïbi and Hicham Boudaoui were booked as Vladimir Petkovic's former side kept a clean sheet against the Desert Warriors.

Switzerland advance to face the winner of Friday's Colombia–Ghana tie in the round of 16. Algeria bow out despite recovering from a 3–0 opening loss to Argentina with wins over Jordan and a dramatic 3–3 draw with Austria that carried them through as a best third-placed team.
