Switzerland beat Colombia 4–3 on penalties at BC Place Vancouver after a goalless draw through 120 minutes, reaching the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since hosting in 1954. Juan Fernando Quintero and Granit Xhaka converted the opening kicks before Davinson Sánchez hit the crossbar and Manuel Akanji fired over, but Gregor Kobel's save from Cucho Hernández allowed substitute Rubén Vargas to tuck in the decisive spot-kick.

Neither side broke the deadlock across a cautious 90 minutes that produced just 0.7 expected goals — Colombia's Jhon Lucumí hit the crossbar in extra time and Jaminton Campaz lashed over from close range in the 115th minute. Switzerland finished with 53% possession and seven shots to Colombia's 15, though Kobel saved all three shots on target he faced before the shootout as Granit Xhaka, Denis Zakaria and Luis Suárez were booked.

Switzerland advance to face defending champions Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday — a rematch of the 2014 group stage that La Albiceleste won 3–0. Colombia exit on penalties for the second time at a World Cup after their 2018 defeat to England, despite dominating extra time with eight shots in the additional 30 minutes.
