Uruguay and Cabo Verde drew 2–2 at Miami Stadium as the World Cup debutants secured a second shock result in Group H. Kevin Pina fired a 34-yard free-kick through the wall and past Fernando Muslera in the 21st minute for Cabo Verde's first World Cup goal, but Maxi Araujo nodded in after Rodrigo Bentancur's header came back off the post on 44 minutes and Agustin Canobbio turned in Araujo's knock-down in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time.
Helio Varela equalised on 61 minutes after capitalising on a mix-up between Mathias Olivera and Muslera, who had raced off his line, as Uruguay dominated thereafter without finding a winner. La Celeste finished with 65% possession, 17 shots and only two on target — both goals — while Cabo Verde had 12 attempts and four on target in front of 64,003 fans. Sidny Lopes Cabral and Diney Borges were booked for Cabo Verde and Rodrigo Bentancur and Mathias Olivera for Uruguay.
Both teams sit on two points in Group H, two behind Spain and one ahead of Saudi Arabia. Cabo Verde face Saudi Arabia in Houston on 26 June knowing victory would secure a last-32 berth, while Uruguay must beat Spain in Guadalajara on the same day to keep their knockout hopes alive after successive draws against lower-ranked opposition.
