Paraguay eliminated Germany 4–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw following extra time at Boston Stadium. Julio Enciso headed in Matías Galarza's cross on 42 minutes for Paraguay's first-ever World Cup knockout goal, Kai Havertz equalised with a header from Florian Wirtz's cross eight minutes into the second half, and Jonathan Tah had a would-be extra-time winner disallowed for a foul on Orlando Gill.
Kai Havertz missed Germany's opening penalty and Tah sent the decisive kick over the bar in sudden death before José Canale converted to seal the shoot-out. Germany held 76% possession and 21 shots to Paraguay's seven in front of 63,945 fans. Gill was named Superior Player of the Match after his saves and the Enciso opener.
Paraguay advance to the round of 16 and will face France in Philadelphia. Germany are eliminated before the last 16 for the second consecutive World Cup — their first-ever defeat on penalties at a World Cup — while La Albirroja reach the knockout stage's second round for the first time since 2010.
