Mexico beat Ecuador 2–0 at Estadio Azteca after kick-off was delayed an hour by thunderstorms, becoming the first Concacaf nation to eliminate a CONMEBOL side at a World Cup. Julián Quiñones fired in Roberto Alvarado's through ball on 22 minutes and returned the favour nine minutes later as Raúl Jiménez lashed into the top corner for a 2–0 half-time lead.
Ecuador held 57% possession but mustered only one shot on target as Piero Hincapié was sent off in stoppage time. Mexico finished with 15 shots and three on target to Ecuador's seven and one in front of 80,824 fans. Quiñones was named Superior Player of the Match after his goal-and-assist display.
Mexico advance to the round of 16 and will face either England or DR Congo in Atlanta. Ecuador bow out despite reaching the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. Les Tricolores' run ends with a first knockout defeat since Bulgaria in 1986.
