England beat co-hosts Mexico 3–2 at Mexico City Stadium to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2018. Jude Bellingham headed in from Bukayo Saka's cross on 36 minutes and bundled home from Harry Kane's lay-off 98 seconds later, before Julián Quiñones pulled one back on 42 minutes in front of 80,824 fans after a one-hour kick-off delay.
Jarell Quansah was sent off on 54 minutes following a VAR review for a studs-up challenge on Jesús Gallardo, but Harry Kane restored England's two-goal cushion from the spot on 60 minutes after Raúl Rangel fouled Anthony Gordon. Raúl Jiménez converted Mexico's penalty on 69 minutes after Kane was penalised for a foul on Brian Gutiérrez, and Thomas Tuchel's side held on through 11 minutes of stoppage time with Dan Burn and Djed Spence reinforcing the back line.
England advance to face Norway in Miami on Saturday — a reunion with Erling Haaland after his late double knocked Brazil out earlier in the day. Mexico bow out despite dominating with 67% possession and 20 shots, ending their wait to reach a first World Cup quarter-final since 1986 at their Azteca fortress.
