Mexico defeated South Africa 2–0 at Mexico City Stadium to open the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Julián Quiñones scored the tournament's first goal in the ninth minute after capitalising on a loose pass, and Raúl Jiménez headed home his first World Cup goal in the 67th minute to seal a comfortable win for Javier Aguirre's side in front of more than 80,000 fans.
The match turned chaotic after the break. Sphephelo Sithole was sent off for South Africa in the 49th minute, Themba Zwane saw red in the 84th minute after a VAR review, and César Montes was dismissed for Mexico in stoppage time — leaving Bafana Bafana with nine men. Mexico led 1–0 at half-time and finished with 61% possession, 16 shots, and four on target to South Africa's three and two.
The result puts Mexico top of Group A on three points ahead of Korea Republic vs Czechia later on Thursday. South Africa must regroup before facing Czechia on matchday two, while Mexico turn their attention to Korea Republic on 18 June in Guadalajara.
