Egypt beat New Zealand 3–1 at BC Place Vancouver to record their first FIFA World Cup win since debuting in 1934. Finn Surman headed New Zealand in front from a corner in the 15th minute, but Mostafa Zico equalised with a header from Mohamed Hany's cross in the 58th minute before Mohamed Salah swept home after a one-two with Zico on 67 minutes and Trezeguet headed in from Salah's corner on 82 minutes.

Mohamed Salah was named Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match after scoring and assisting in front of 52,497 fans. Egypt finished with 56% possession, 19 shots and seven on target to New Zealand's 11 and five as the All Whites squandered another lead having also twice been pegged back in their opening draw with IR Iran. Mohanad Lasheen was booked for Egypt and Sarpreet Singh and Callum McCowatt for New Zealand.

The result lifts Egypt to four points at the top of Group G and leaves them needing only a point against IR Iran in Seattle on 26 June to reach the knockout stage for the first time. New Zealand remain without a World Cup win and must beat Belgium in Vancouver on the final matchday to keep their last-32 hopes alive.
