The United States beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2–0 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium to reach the World Cup round of 16 for the fourth tournament in a row. Folarin Balogun swept home Weston McKennie's pass on the stroke of half-time for his third goal of the tournament, but the co-hosts were reduced to 10 men when Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute after a VAR review for a challenge on Tarik Muharemovic.

Mauricio Pochettino's side held firm despite Bosnia's numerical advantage, with Matt Freese making three saves as the Dragons finished with 52% possession, 11 shots and four on target to the USA's nine and two in front of 68,827 fans. Malik Tillman settled the tie with a dipping free kick in the 82nd minute and was named Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match. Stjepan Radeljic was booked on 79 minutes.

The United States advance to face Belgium in Seattle on Monday — a rematch of the 2014 round of 16 — 2–1 Belgian win. Balogun will miss the tie through suspension. Bosnia and Herzegovina bow out in their first World Cup knockout appearance despite Edin Džeko's best efforts to rally the Dragons after the red card.
